Incumbent Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki emerged as the governorship candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state gubernatorial election.
Obaseki emerged the party’s candidate after his closest rival to the PDP governorship election ticket Ken Imasaugbon stepped down from the race minutes into the primary election to give way for his excellency to be the torch bearer for the gubernatorial election holding soon.
With Governor Obaseki’s emergence as the People’s Democratic Parties candidate, the governor faces his political rival Osagie Ize-iyamu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other candidates from ither political parties in Edo state for the September 19 governorship election.
In 2016, Ize-iyamu was PDP’s candidate while Obaseki with the backing of his erstwhile political godfather Adams Oshiomhole contested under APC and won the election. Things are not so smooth between the Governor and Adams Oshiomhole at the moment as they had a bitter power battle tussle over who controls what in the state’s APC political hemisphere. The rift was subtle at first, but it became obvious a year ago and grew worse almost by the day until their final split.
The first casualty was Mr Oshiomhole whose suspension by his local ward in Edo State, reportedly under the manipulation of the governor, was used in persuading a court to suspend him from office as the national chairman of the party. Governor Obaseki would later get his own bitter pills when he was disqualified from the APC governorship primary for alleged inconsistencies in his academic credentials, a plot some observers believe was scripted by Mr Oshiomhole.
In June 2020, Obaseki left the APC after he was disqualified by theparty’s screening committee for the primary election. Obasekiaccused the party of being biased in the screening process anddefected to the PDP days after. Ize-iyamu on the other hand emergedthe APC governorship candidate after the party’s primary election. Ultimately, Governor Obaseki defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he immediately renewed his bid for reelection. In the span of the crisis between the duo, and by extension within the APC, there were intrigues, sacks, litigations, threats, among others.
The Governor has since started his political campaign with the People’s Democratic Party PDP and hopes to win the election.
